Linda Abarbanell, who studies Chiapas textiles, writes, "The little frogs, according to [Walter F. "Chip"] Morris, are musicians of the rain -- they sing to praise the saints when they make the rain fall." Fertility and sustaining life are, therefore, the meaning behind the design. [Personal communication, 2008.]
A woman's huipil of a similar design, but without arms, appears in The Weaving and Folk Art of Chiapas, Mexico (1977), 194–95. This catalogue example is described as sk'u' antz (a woman's huipil). The toad is called xpokok. It comes from Pantelhó Center, Barrio Naranjas.
