National Palace Murals

Scene showing a native woman (presumably, La Malinche) standing behind Hernando Cortés. She may be wiping away a tear, saddened by the violence of the conquest symbolized by all the weapons and the native man's humble presentation of treasures at Cortés's feet. Rivera makes Cortés appear monster-like, with a pig-like nose, no chin, and arthritic knees.

Mural by Diego Rivera, exploring colonial themes.
