Kislak Collection -- Olmec Objects

STANDING STONE FIGURE
Mexico; provenience unknown
Olmec culture
C.E. 400-700
Mottled green and white stone
Ht. 2.7 cm (5")

A classical Olmec frontal figure carved in utmost simplicity and devoid of ornamentation. It displays the oblong deformed head, tabular ears, fat nose, and drooping mouth. Unfortunately, the lower arms are missing. The stone may be quartzite rather than real jadeite, though all green stone had comparable symbolic value for the ancient Olmec.
