Both Robert Haskett and Stephanie Wood received their doctorates in Latin American history in the mid-1980s with a specialization in colonial Mexico and the history of the Nahuas under Spanish rule.

This collection dates largely from this period, when Wood and Haskett were living in or visiting Mexico, for the purposes of research.

Haskett came to the University of Oregon in 1987, and Wood came in 1988.
