Who we are and what we do

Macehualli Educational Research is a California non-profit corporation (EIN 32-016802) founded in 2005 for the purpose of promoting the revitalization of Mexican indigenous language and culture. In cooperation with the Zacatecas Institute for Teaching and Research in Ethnology, a Mexican non-profic corporation, we grant scholarships to indigenous undergraduate students at the Zacatecas State University. These young native speakers of Nahuatl and Wixarika (Huichol) spend between five and ten hours per week studying ancient and modern aspects of their own culture, teaching their language to non-native speakers, and preparing monolingual educational materials. Currently we are working on a monolingual dictionary and grammar of Modern Huastecan Nahuatl and a digitalizaed version of Alonso de Monlina's sixteenth-century dictionary of Classical Nahuatl. We offer classes in Older and Modern Nahuatl through the Zacatecas State University, and we are preparing a course in Wixarika.
